“THERE’S MORE TO ME THAN JUST A BODY”

HE’S GOT ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS BODIES IN THE WORLD AND IT’S ON DISPLAY ALMOST EVERY TIME YOU SEE HIM. SO THE CHOICE OF WHO TO PUT ON THE COVER OF OUR BODY ISSUE WAS SIMPLE — IT HAD TO BE OLYMPIC DIVER TOM DALEY

TOM DALEY

Newsflash! Tom Daley doesn’t want to take his clothes off.

As his publicist relays the news, it comes as something of a shock. Because we’re accustomed to seeing the British Olympic and World Championship diver in his Speedos — and he has one of the most famous bodies in the world.

We’re all familiar with the grooves of Tom Daley’s abs, the smattering of hair on his forearms, the tattoo of the Olympic rings on his right bicep. Some of us might even think we’re more familiar with his body than those of some of the men we’ve had sex with.

But Tom Daley doesn’t just have one of the most familiar bodies in the world. For many gay men, his body represents the male physical ideal: the body we lust after and strive to have ourselves. Of course, our idea of male beauty changes over time; just look at the difference between Christopher Reeve as Superman in the Seventies and Eighties and Henry Cavill as the superhero’s most recent incarnation. And hopefully we’ve shown in this issue that lots of different male body types can be beautiful and should be celebrated as such.

But if you had to single out one man who represents the ideal body for the greatest number of gay men in 2017, you’d be hard-pressed to ind a more obvious candidate than Tom Daley. The only thing is, at the age of 22, he’s decided to cover up his body — at least when he’s not in the pool. So what’s going on? We take advantage of the publication of his new health and itness book Tom’s Daily Plan, to ind out.

In person, Daley is sparky and intelligent, and accustomed to talking about his body in the matter-of-fact way that athletes often discuss their physique as a key piece of kit or equipment. But how will he respond to some of our probing questions about his relationship with his body — and the way it’s viewed by other gay men?
