Morocco, Jamaica, India, Malaysia, Tanzania, the Maldives: what do these countries have in common? Well, they are among the 77 countries where homosexuality is illegal.

They are also all incredibly popular tourist destinations, welcoming millions of visitors to golden beaches, ancient temples and thriving cities every year.

But as an LGBT+ tourist, we all face a moral dilemma when we choose to visit one of them. Are we contributing to a repressive regime when we’re riding a camel through the dunes outside Marrakech? How about when we’re sinking a Singapore Sling in the city it takes its name from?

Or should British tourists use their privileged position to visit homophobic countries and book a double room, hold hands where it’s safe, and visit those underground gay bars — proudly announcing: “We’re here, we’re queer and this is what a gay tourist looks like; we’re just as nice as the other tourists”?
