The courage of his conviction

Fifty years after the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales, a former ser viceman — once jailed for being gay — accepts an award on behalf of all those who suffered when their sexuality was against the law

When Attitude first asked 81-year-old Keith Biddlecombe to accept one of our Pride Awards, he declined — until we explained that we wanted to give it to him on behalf of all those gay men who, like him, were treated as criminals because of their sexuality.

Keith’s story, while unique, will be sadly familiar to that of thousands of men arrested under anti-gay laws until homophobic legislation regarding sexual offences was fully repealed in England and Wales in 2003.
