The dreamy British newcomer makes an electric film debut in Eliza Hittman’s taut coming-out drama — if that’s the appropriate term for a study of such conflicted sexual identity. Sporting a wholly convincing Brooklyn twang, Dickinson is a tense tangle of insecurities and desires as 19-year-old Frankie, a jobless working-class jock on the less hipster-y end of the New York borough: by day, it’s all laddish banter and hetero dating, while at night, he’s drawn to the gay chat-room scene. Shot with grain and grit inspired by European art cinema, Hittman charts this collapsing double life with compassion and humour, but also a cool shiver of eroticism. 24 November
