QUEER SPACE

As Dr Who, a show renowned for pushing the boundaries of gender and sexual diversity, prepares for the Time Lord’s regeneration into a woman, Attitude looks at some of its queerest moments

Since 2005 the fight for LGBT+ equality has had an unlikely champion. This is no Lycra-wearing Avenger or lightsabre-wielding Jedi knight, this is a hero whose weapons are intelligence, kindness and neat one-liners that would give RuPaul a run for her money.

Doctor Who has always been on the side of tolerance and understanding, with The Doctor fighting for the ordinary person throughout the show’s (on-off-back-onagain) 54-year history.

“In 900 years of time and space, I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important,” said Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor, but the original run of the series — between 1963 and 1989 — largely ignored LGBT+ characters. That changed when the show returned 12 years ago under the care of Russell T Davies, the man responsible for Queer as Folk. New Who was a hit straightaway, due largely to the strength of the writing, an amazing cast and impressive production values. And a vital and clever element was setting it firmly in the real world.
