NO MORE SUFFERING IN SILENCE

As the independent inquiry into childhood sexual abuse continues, The Truth Project offers survivors a safe space in which to tell their harrowing stories

The statistics are heartbreaking. One child in every 10 will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday, and LGBT+ people are especially at risk of abuse. In fact, self-reported figures show that we’re twice as likely to be subjected to this trauma as our heterosexual peers — about one in every seven gay men and lesbians is abused when young, compared to approximately one in every 16 straight people.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) worms its way through our community. Without help and support, survivors’ lives can be destroyed from the inside. A third of sexual abuse survivors experience depression later in life, and many of those have suicidal thoughts.

But we may not even be seeing the full extent of the problem because the figures we do have only reflect the survivors who actually come forward to report the crime.

How many others suffer in silence? The Truth Project is a crucial refuge for survivors who are ready to share their story. Founded in 2015 and part of the UK’s Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, it gives victims the opportunity to speak to a support worker in a safe space, without fear of judgment.
