To some of his more cultured and ironic friends, Guy is known as “our young man”, a phrase the author Colette used in reference to the dying Proust. Sexy, French, ambivalent and absolutely stunning, Guy is blessed by a type of physical beauty that lays the world at his feet. Under the tutorship of his acerbic agent, Pierre-Georges, he begins modelling, conquering the late-1970s New York fashion world and becoming the darling of Fire Island. As the years pass and the hedonism of the disco era gives way to the devastation of Aids, Guy doesn’t seem to age; a sort of modernday Dorian Grey. He is still modelling at the age of 35, deceiving the many men who find themselves infatuated with him into believing that he is considerably younger. These are men who always want something from Guy, which it may well be possible to arrange — for the right price. But with all the vanity, manipulation and calculated kindness of being a “clever whore”, is there any room left over for love? Sexually frank, wry, often brutally honest and teeming with beautifully observed detail, this latest novel reminds us why Edmund White is celebrated as one of America’s best contemporary writers.
