CYBELE MALINOWSKI

Before you made this album you had a whole bunch of songs recorded that you scrapped. Why?

I had about eight demos. But my mum was visiting LA and I played her the songs and I could tell from the look on her face that she knew how bad I was feeling. She said, “they’re quite dark, dear.” I was like yeah, fuck. She’s my biggest fan and a really good gauge for me. That was the moment I thought I needed to start again. I didn’t want to put out something that reflected bad times and feelings for me, but the moment when I decided to leave that music behind I got even worse. I got depressed and felt like crap. I spent a year binge-drinking, feeling unmotivated, sleeping all day and being awake all night. Then I quit drinking and got healthy and stopped eating heaps of shit food. And that’s when I started to feel really good about myself and when I made Wild Things. It wasn’t me consciously trying to make a happier album, it just came out that way.
