THE X FACTOR’S shy, sultry-voiced singer has carved out a successful career with many gorgeous songs in her repertoire. From heartfelt ballads to empowering anthemic stompers, via a re-imagining of the classic Lady Sings the Blues album, she has shown that hers is a classic voice that intones many of the great divas.

She has also been astonishingly open about the personal and professional dramas that she’s faced along the way — from sustaining a career while a single mother to high-profile celebrity relationships — but, now 30, she has come out the other side the same warm, down-to-earth woman we remember from 2010.

Tell us about your new album, Superwoman.

I’ve almost finished it; it’s quite woman-empowering. It’s all about what I’ve been through in relationships and becoming strong again. I’ve also learnt a lot about song writing and melodies and I’ve been brutal this time around. If I don’t like a song, it’s gone.
