Ford Focus Could Bring Oscar Glory

HAUNTING THRILLER HAS TRUE CHARACTER AND BENEFITS FROM DIRECTOR’S BEAUTIFUL PACING AND STAR TURNS FROM ITS TWO LEADING ACTORS

FILM OF THEMONTH

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS

Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson

→ In his first picture since Oscar-nominated A Single Man, Tom Ford takes on the American novel, Tony and Susan. This adaptation focuses on art gallery owner, Susan (Adams), who unexpectedly receives her ex-husband’s novel in the post. The book turns out to be a captivating but violent story that begins to haunt Susan. This thriller includes a film within a film, both parts uniquely entrancing in their own way but still seamlessly intertwined. Although there is a sufficient amount of ambiguity and narrative distortion, the film still benefits from being a detailed but beautifully paced drama, with fascinating but accessible characters. There’s strong support from Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Michael Shannon, but a harrowing performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and a fragile, dejected turn from Adams could see them both tasting Oscar glory for the first time. 14 October 5/5
