A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH

MOVING TALE OF HOW ACTIVISTS BATTLED CONDEMNATION AND HATRED — AS WELL AS AIDS ITSELF — IN A RACE AGAINST TIME

BOOK OF THE MONTH

HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE — THE STORY OF HOW ACTIVISTS AND SCIENTISTS TAMED AIDS

David France/Picador

→ For those of us who didn’t experience it first-hand, it’s impossible to comprehend what it was like when Aids first struck. But this powerful book evokes — with spellbinding humanity — something of what those early activists faced and achieved. More than 600 pages chronicle the landmark battle to halt the epidemic in America. Weaving together the stories of dozens of individuals, this is an insider’s account of a pivotal moment in LGBT+ history. Charting the founding of ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group), and the rise of the underground drug market, the book grippingly recounts how these activists learnt to become researchers, lobbyists, drug smugglers and clinicians, establishing their own newspapers, research journals and laboratories. Battling disinterest and condemnation from mainstream society and confronted with shame and hatred, this small band of men and women chose to fight for their right to live by educating themselves and demanding to become full partners in the race for effective treatments. An extraordinary achievement, and published on 1 December, World Aids Day, this is one of the most important books ever written on the subject.
