Attitude AWARDS 2016

CREATED TO CELEBRATE LGBT+ VISIBILITY IN MEDIA, ENTERTAINMENT, CULTURE, ARTS AND SPORT - AND OUR ALLIES - THIS YEAR’S ATTITUDE AWARDS CERTAINLY DID JUST THAT. SPONSORED BY VIRGIN HOLIDAYS AND HELD IN SUPPORT OF THE ELTON JOHN AIDS FOUNDATION, THIS YEAR’S EVENT WAS ONE OF THE MAGAZINE’S BIGGEST STAR-STUDDED AFFAIRS YET. AND IT CERTAINLY DELIVERED WITH ITS OWN FAIR SHARE OF SURPRISES…

Life at Attitude Towers in the lead up to the awards is pretty hectic. While producing one of our biggest issues ever — this year featuring six covers, shot in London, New York and LA — we’re also organising a prestigious dinner, awards ceremony and after-party. But it was worth it.

The event opened with speeches from Attitude’s new owner, Darren Styles, and from Mark Anderson, the managing director of headline sponsors Virgin Holidays, who reaffirmed their commitment to equality. Host Alan Cumming then opened proceedings, introducing Ally award-winner Beverley Knight.

The awards kicked off with an emotional speech from Man of the Year Wentworth Miller and the heartstrings were also pulled by coming out stories from MNEK and Omar Sharif Jr, while Geri Horner (ahem, Halliwell) revealed that she is pregnant. A tipsy Alan Carr had us roaring with laughter, before Tom Daley and his fellow Olympians collected the Active award for Team GB’s LGBT+ athletes. And there was still time for a special video from British album of the year winner Adele.
