no longer frozen out

I do believe in fairies. I do, I do, exclaimed Peter Pan. And Disney accepts us too — never more so than when red-shirted LGBT+ people arrive for Gay Days Anaheim. We shall go to the ball!

When’s it my turn? Wouldn’t I love, love to explore that shore up above? Out of the sea, wish I could be, part of that world.

These are the aching lyrics sung by Ariel in The Little Mermaid. I was 13 when the film came out in 1989 — a year after my first taste of foreign travel: a visit to Disney World, Florida.

At that point in my life, there was only one antidote for escaping those feelings that I had growing up — of not being good enough, always picked last, not being part of the gang, not someone who is included or eligible to be part of anything — and that was fantasy. Music, TV and film were my friends (I wasn’t very bookish unless you call Smash Hits a book).
