Juno Becoming

Juno Dawson is the young people’s author who used to be known as James. She speaks to us about teenagers, transitioning and her new Attitude column on iconic LGBT culture.

Juno Dawson is a striking person. She’s here to announce to Attitude readers that she begins a new LGBT culture column in the magazine this month but storms into a busy Starbucks off Piccadilly with red nail varnish, a rapid Yorkshire voice and a Chihuahua named Prince.

“I am very recently Juno Dawson,” she announces to me and most of the straight, white businessmen who surround us. “Before, I wrote five novels for young adults as James Dawson. In 2014 I was voted Queen of Teen: strangely prescient. But the book I’ve become most well-known for is This Book is Gay, which is a non-fiction guide for young people.”

About Attitude

The new issue of Attitude features Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy on the cover, with an exclusive interview in which he discusses life since coming out. Inside we have a Valentine’s special where we look at the broad spectrum of gay relationships, plus columns and advice on dating as transgender, HIV positive, masc, femme, and everything in between. There are also interviews with British actor Douglas Booth and Australian singer songwriter Josef Salvat. Our writer Matt Cain goes home to Bolton for the city’s first Pride, and we chat to our new columnist Juno Dawson about her transition. We also have a feature on the forgotten gay language, polari.
