The original Muscle Beach (located on Ocean Front Walk, off Appian Way between Pacific Terrace and Arcadia Terrace) is where the fitness movement that swept the 20th century began. Established on the beach area south of the Santa Monica Pier in 1933, this was where juggernauts of the bodybuilding scene such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno came to flex their pecs. Today, you’ll find plenty of serious regulars, a healthy crowd of amateurs and lots of gawking tourists. Visit at the weekend and marvel at the beach gymnasts and their ripped physiques, and feel free to join in; the vibe is generally friendly and you might just pick up a few good tips.
