ASD Beyond IQ Scores

People with autism have many strengths and intellectual abilities beyond a number.
Autism is a developmental disorder that spans a spectrum and should challenge how we view and think about intelligence.
One common misconception is that the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is the sole way to measure intelligence. However, the autism community is comprised of many unique intellectual abilities that challenge the one-size-fits-all number.
Autism has a variety of intellectual profiles
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often characterized by social interaction, communication, and repetitive behavior challenges, but this does not mean that intellect is lessened.
Each individual has unique strengths, and reducing them to a number fails to capture the actual depth of their thinking abilities.
Intelligence includes skills beyond what the IQ test measures. Yet, while these tests attempt to determine mental ability, they often miss an individual’s strengths and talents.
