The Victorian printer Emery Walker revolutionised the industry with his cutting-edge techniques, such as using photographs to create plates, instead of laboriously hand-carving them.
A new exhibition in the small drawing room of Emery Walker’s House – one of the most authentic Arts & Crafts homes in Britain – gathers together stunning private press books, proof pages and a printing block created by William Morris. A high point is The Odyssey, translated by TE Lawrence, which was printed only a year before Walker’s death. Today it is seen as one of the most exquisite private press books of the 20th century.
