IN HIS 1978 CULT CLASSIC, THE Rider, Dutch author Tim Krabbé suggests, “The greater the suffering, the greater the pleasure. That is nature’s payback to riders for the homage they pay her by suffering.”

While the pain delivered upon those who turn the pedals has never been in question, far less spoken about is the fact cycling can also be tough on parents. Bloody tough. The demands are typically more palatable if you already possess a love for the bike, of course. But whether your child’s name is Anna Meares, Robbie McEwen or little Joey Blogs, it frequently demands long drives, early starts, lost weekends, holidays dictated by race calendars and, of course, equipment in an almost constant need of upgrading to keep pace with growing bodies and ambitious rivals.
