DISC BRAKE GROUPSETS

Everything you need to know about stopping your bike

A BUYER’S GUIDE

It seems every show or launch bike we see these days is equipped with disc brakes. It’s hardly surprising, given the obvious benefits in our Gulf Stream-affected climate, how well discs have been received. Moving the braking surface away from the road and all the water and crud that goes with it, is a logical choice, added to which there is also a certain logic to providing a dedicated braking surface, rather than wearing through the rim of your wheel. So whether we like it or not, brake discs on road bikes seem to be here to stay.

It’s still a relatively new technology for road bikes, only being launched in 2013, and the development curve is still fairly rapid with big improvements coming to the function and form with every iteration.

Shimano, Campagnolo, SRAM and Rotor all offer disc brake groupsets, so we’ve run through all the current options – focusing on hydraulic brakes – and highlighted some of the atributes and talking points of each, to make you a hydro-stopping know-it-all.

ROTOR UNO DISC

Geting into the groupset manufacturing market is no easy task – you need to be compatible but not the same, similar but differentiated, offer something unique but not wacky or off-the-wall. Our friends at Rotor have impressed over the years with superb engineering solutions that reflect the huge time and thought they put into every product and the Uno groupset is no different.
