GUTS APLENTY: In Crawford [left], Khan might be facing his best-ever opponent
Photo: MIKEY WILLIAMS/TOP RANK

THREE years ago, Amir Khan took a fight nobody said he could win and ended up flat on his back in a manner nobody wanted to see. The damage was done by a Saul “Canelo” Alvarez right hand, thrown in the direction of Khan’s chin in the sixth round, but plenty felt the damage had been done the moment Khan signed the contract to participate in a fight at a catchweight of 155 pounds (some 15 pounds above the division in which he won world titles).

It was another of those ‘daring to be great’ scenarios that pay off only in terms of a fighter getting paid and end up being detrimental to their health. Khan wouldn’t fight again for two years. Some said he should never fight again.
