Turner Timber Frames worked closely with young couple Nigel and Hannah to build this 280m 2 , modern-day farmhouse on the working family farm. Founders and editors-in-chief of Indie Farmer (www.indiefarmer.com), they needed a house to suit their modern lifestyle. The architect's design was for a home reflecting the site's agricultural heritage (hence the mix of black metal cladding and cedar detailing) whilst providing a warm, cosy and efficient living environment.
The couple opted for Turner's Advanced factory-made system, achieving excellent insulation and a U-value of 0.16W/m 2 K (which is significantly better than Building Regs requirements). The timber frame was erected in les than two weeks on site, giving Nigel and Hannah a weathertight house shell ready for them to take through to completion. "We knew fairly early on we wanted to go for timber frame, for a number of reasons,” says Nigel. “We found this method was very competitive from a cost perspective. And when it comes to energy efficiency, today’s timber frame builds perform very highly in terms of airtightness. The Turner Timber Frames team ensured our design was achievable and helped to make some minor cost saving amendments, allowing our budget to go even further so we could invest in the most efficient, well-insulated home possible.”
