CUBAN ENTREPRENEURS

CUBA’S BUSINESS REVOLUTION

Words: Claire Boobbyer
Tasting success – the El Café team led by Nelson Rodríguez Tamayo

Ten years ago, a new dawn emerged in Havana. Thousands of Cubans opened private restaurants, cafés, bars, gift stores and boutique accommodation. The chance to open these small businesses had been rubber-stamped by then president Raúl Castro in a bid to boost Cuba’s ailing economy. While entrepreneurial Habaneros battled bureaucracy, unfamiliar tax laws and the lack of wholesale markets, visitors to the island began enjoying a galaxy of fine dining joints, funky little cafés, designer stores, late-night bars, music haunts and independent boutique hotels. Plenty of private sector jobs were outlawed on the island – and they still are – but now more than half a million Cubans run their own business – the majority in Havana. This revolution sparked life back into the Cuban capital. Visitors who haven’t been to Havana since the aughts would have trouble recognising the city today.

When Nelson Rodríguez Tamayo, an industrial engineer, couldn’t find the breakfast he wanted in Havana, he opened his own place. Having worked at Allpress Espresso Roastery & Café in London, he had all the skills and coffee know-how. The hard part was negotiating Cuba’s mind-bending rules and regs. The unsigned El Café on Calle Armagura is a triumph. Fried eggs and sourdough, coffee from the central Cuban mountains, veg juices and spicy Vietnamese noodles are served in the Spanish-tiled townhouse café.

“It makes me happy to make my customers happy and deliver an experience that brings people satisfaction and joy,” says Nelson. “And I love being in charge of my own destiny. I try to reflect that for my staff, too.”
