You know how it’s unlucky to hear a cuckoo? But did you know it’s LUCKY to see a hornbill? That’s just one of the colourful myths about bird life which abound in African culture. And this week our Botswana correspondent Paul Donovan shares some of the bird stories he’s heard in the countryside there. It’s a fascinating insight into the depth of meaning that links birds with people’s imagination. Maybe we don’t have enough of it in the UK! And sticking with exotics, this issue includes our regular roundup of the softbill scene (including details of a unique show/sale), news of ambitious reintro schemes involving mynas, pheasants and macaws. Canaries, budgies, British and finches also feature, of course.
