A BIRD which was once prolific in Kintyre has been spotted incubating eggs on West-port Marsh.
A lapwing incubating four eggs at Westport Marsh where four pairs are breeding.
Machrihanish Seabird Observatory warden Eddie Maguire saw the lapwing recently. He said the species has declined dramatically during the last 30 years mainly due to changes in agricultural practice. Mr Maguire said: ‘Farmers have drained much of the damp grasslands and many of our wading birds are becoming scarce as their feeding grounds become dry land. Locally lapwings are a rare breeding species, however, there is still a small remnant population around Tayinloan.’
