I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: cities need Europe, and Europe needs its cities. This sentiment rings true now more than ever. As Europe is enduring what European Commission President Juncker describes as “an existential crisis”, we need to rethink the way we do things. The EU is struggling to remain legitimate and relevant. Most of all, Europe is failing to connect with its citizens, to close the gap between EU institutions and the people they represent. This is why we are experiencing crises such as the Brexit vote, the rise of extremist politics and growing disillusionment and discontent. At EUROCITIES, we are convinced that if we want to rebuild Europe from the foundations, we need to look to our cities.
