I WAS HOPING TO WRITE THIS LATEST EDITOR’S LETTER WITH ENGLAND POISED TO PLAY IN THE WORLD CUP FINAL, THE SOUND OF THREE LIONS RINGING IN MY EARS FROM ALL AROUND. EVEN THOUGH GARETH SOUTHGATE’S LADS FELL AT THE SECOND TO LAST HURDLE, BROUDIE, BADDIEL AND SKINNER’S BRITPOP ANTHEM NOW LOOKS LIKE BEING NO.1 ONCE AGAIN – BY MY RECKONING IT’S BEEN RE-RELEASED SEVEN TIMES – AND HAS SOUNDTRACKED A HUGELY POSITIVE FEW WEEKS. ANOTHER WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF THE UNIFYING POWER THAT BOTH SPORT AND POP MUSIC CAN HAVE ON A NATION.
It’s a scorcher here at Classic Pop Towers and we’re just back from a trip to the Isle of Wight Festival to see Depeche Mode. We were rather perturbed at some of the young pups in the crowd there seemingly puzzled by who Gahan, Gore and Fletcher were. Seriously, if ever anyone is in need of a subscription to our mag it’s those youngsters…
