GOODBYE JUMBO

A 1990 Album Of The Year in some parts and now back on vinyl, Karl Wallinger’s second LP was another artfully devised collection of classicist pop writing. The Beatles remained his idols, especially in God On My Side’s arrangement and When The Rainbow Comes’ Harrisonesque melancholy. But there was also sweet soul in Ain’t Gonna Come Till I’m Ready and – obviously – Sweet Soul Dream. Put The Message In The Box meanwhile suggested Dylan doing powerpop, and Way Down Now’s nods to The Rolling Stones were proud.
