NO CONDESCENSION PLEASE!

LET”S DISPEL THE MYTHS ABOUT WOMEN AND CONCEALED CARRY ONCE AND FOR ALL
The author”s teenage, petite daughter running her personal handgun, a Ruger SR1911 Lightweight Commander.

SPOILER ALERT: Women neither need nor require special treatment for concealed carry.

It”s a purse, not a range bag: the author walking the stage for a concealed carry fashion show during the NRA Annual Meeting in 2019.

This may be an unpopular opinion in some circles, but it”s a viewpoint based on years of experience and cold, hard truths. Do women need to make certain concessions to carry? Of course we do, but so do men. Do women need special gear to carry? No. No, we do not.

Myths, rumors and outright fallacies run rampant among women who are new to concealed carry or simply untrained. Let”s take a look at some of the front-runners and consider reality.

THE LGS EXPERIENCE

Before we get into this one let”s cover a quick disclaimer. Not all local gun stores are alike. There are good and bad ones out there and I”m not condemning them all. However, the overwhelming majority of women who have visited their local gun stores have had negative experiences. That negativity may drop away when the guys behind the counter realize the woman they”re dealing with knows her stuff.

Here”s how it goes all too often. I walk into a new gun store complete with blue hair, piercings, ink, and a burning desire to wait and see how the guys are going to treat me. The results are the same as when I had a more mellow appearance: More often than not the welcome from behind the counter goes to snubby revolvers,.380 ACP mouse guns and pink pistols. If I ask about concealed carry, the Flash Bang bra holster is frequently mentioned. If I ask about hunting, they go for the 20-gauge shotguns (or, memorably, the.410s). Overpriced purses are displayed for carry because heaven forbid a woman carry on her body. Lectures abound. It”s ridiculously frustrating and if you”re a woman who is new to guns, it can be wildly off-putting.
