Stars on ice

Flowers? In winter? That’s right: Jim Walsh took a photo of these fist-sized “frost flowers” after a cold night on the Ottawa River in Mackey, Ont. “They looked like large, white feathers,” he says. According to engineer and ice expert Bob Dill, who runs the website lakeice.org, the formations sprout under cold, still conditions, usually on thin ice. “They form on a point or bump on the ice surface,” explains Dill. “The growth is from the conden sation of water vapour in the air, in a fashion similar to the way snowflakes form.” If there’s a lot of water vapour in the air, many flowers will grow on the ice— sometimes enough to cover the surface. —Jackie Davis
