Raise the roof

SKILL SET

Most roofs are made from trusses, but a stick-framed roof with rafters is often your best bet for water-access cabins. (Ever tried to lug trusses in a boat?) The most familiar is the common rafter. For the beginner, laying out a rafter can seem daunting, but it’s easier than it looks. This quick instructional will help you determine where to make your cut for the birdsmouth (which accommodates the stud wall) depending on your desired pitch. Our example shows a rafter for a simple gable roof with a 6/12 pitch—i.e., 6" of rise for every 12" of run—for an 8'-wide shed with 2x6 rafters.
