WHAT MAKES A TOP RIDER?
Greg Van Avermaet used to be such a nearly man. A good strong rider, an
aggressive attacker, a man who could both climb well and turn out a decent sprint. But rarely would you find him on the top step of the podium. Now he’s the Olympic champion, a double Tour de France road stage winner and has
been the dominant force of what we’ve seen of the 2017 Classics season so far.
In an interview with Cycling Weekly in January, we pinned this turnaround on his first Tour stage win in 2015. And in this week’s Fitness feature, the Belgian
explains how a greater focus on the demands of targeted races has helped fuel his success.
