First World Problems:
Opulence, Decadence, Common Sense...
“Utility is when you have one telephone,” according to U.S. columnist Doug Larson. “Luxury is when you have two, opulence is when you have three - and paradise is when you have none.”
Larson was writing before the days of multiple mobile devices, but the principle inspired this issue of DANTE. Most of us love luxury, comfort and labour-saving devices, but at what cost? Opulence is fine, but how close is it to its near siblings, decadence and vulgarity?
Our cover features a crown exclusively produced for DANTE by digital artist Mataro da Vergato, for which we thank him. Most of the magazine celebrates the luxury of culture and sometimes criticises its excesses.
Having one telephone is a luxury in Third World countries, where clean water and basic food are enough. There are a lot of First-World Problems in the following.
DANTE, being the only International magazine with an Italian soul, includes a cover story on the Renaissance of some luxury companies in the country where we started. We have a few stabs at defining luxury and opulence, particularly in Massimo Gava’s cover article.
Some of our writers contribute more thoughts on success and excess in our “Food for Thought” column.
Meanwhile, writer and architect Tiziana Leopizzi reflects on the timelessness of classical art and its contrast with trashy tack of the worst kind. All that glitters is not gold, even if it is a Trump Tower, an Amex card, a pair of Golden Nike Dunk High, or a bling bathroom with gold taps and loo paper.
We may assume that none of these are the ultimate coveted luxury object. The debate on what else it may be is a long one. A short list might include: a dream home, be it penthouse, mews house, beach house, country retreat, ranch or whatever; a fancy car or private jet; diamonds and pearls… add your own choice.
Enjoy the issue, Dante and Beatrice...
