DANZA&DANZA International  |  Mar/Apr
Woolf Works, created by Wayne McGregor for the Royal Ballet in 2015 starring the Italian Prima ballerina assoluta Alessandra Ferri, is about to enter the repertoire of La Scala Theatre Ballet. For the occasion, we’ve criss-crossed the thoughts of the energetic British choreographer – who also discusses other projects in the works – with those of Ferri, who will be appearing in the title at La Scala in April opposite the Royal Ballet Principal dancer Federico Bonelli.
Rather elusive due to his shy and retiring nature, the director of the Mariinsky Ballet Yuri Fateev granted Danza&Danza a lengthy interview, revealing his vision for the company in the new millennium.
Peeping Tom is a hot name on the European dance scene. Behind the brand is a couple of artists, who are life partners too: Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier. In anticipation of the world debut in Luxembourg of their new work Kind, the last in their trilogy on the family, we went to meet them. Also in this issue, we introduce our international readers to a special, Italian phenomenon, Fattoria Vittadini: a collective of ten choreographer-performers that can handle a wide range of diverse projects; and we review the key new productions in Italy and abroad. Among them, Winterreise by Angelin Preljocaj for La Scala Theatre Ballet; Carmen by Jiří Bubenícek and Benjamin Pech’s new Swan Lake for the Rome Opera Ballet; Christian Spuck’s Winterreise for Ballett Zürich; Carmen by Johan Inger for the Dresden Semperoper Ballett; Portrait Wayne McGregor for the Bayerisches Staatsballett; Dogs Sleep by Marco Goecke and Pontus Lidberg’s take on Les Noces for the Paris Opera Ballet.
For our in-depth cultural feature, we look at the legacy of the Bauhaus, the school founded by Walter Gropius in 1919, whose members included the dancer and painter Oskar Schlemmer, who greatly influenced dance in the decades that came after.
