How a fair price is CHANGING LIVES

Think of Fairtrade and you probably think of bananas, sugar and coffee. But what does it mean beyond that – and is the work of The Fairtrade Foundation, an organisation founded almost a quarter of a century ago, still relevant? Chef Allegra McEvedy travelled to Palestine to witness the olive harvest and to see how farmers, growers and producers in this beleaguered region are being given a better chance to survive and thrive

Her professional cooking career spans more than 20 years, but the popular chef believes there are ways to make a difference beyond winning Michelin stars. She is a patron of the Fairtrade Foundation, and in 2008 she was awarded an MBE for promoting healthier eating and ethical food sourcing in the UK.

One of the joys of being patron of the Fairtrade Foundation is getting up-close to so many of the mind-blowingly fresh and damned tasty ingredients. Peanuts straight from the ground and tea from the bush in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world; the most wonderful bananas in the Windward Isles, where farmers are caught in the middle of a UK supermarket price war; wine grapes in South Africa, where the old system of paying workers in wine was tearing apart communities. In the course of my travels, I’ve also become accustomed to hearing tales of producers struggling to live, work and support their families.
