’Tis the season to be merry – but what if you need to say no to the booze over the festive period? Our food editor, not a natural-born teetotaller, has some sage advice…

I knew I’d never be able to keep my pregnancy a secret because as soon as I refused a drink people would guess – and so they did, despite my carefully concocted tale of obscure medication. I’m someone who thinks no good dinner is complete without wine, who lists sitting in fancy bars drinking cocktails as a favourite hobby. Needless to say I’ve found enforced temperance to be something of an uphill battle – no earth mother ‘I just don’t miss it’ affirmations from me. I’ve tried an impressive selection of alcohol-free drinks, in the hope that you can sort the wheat beer from the chaff. Whether you’re not drinking over the festive season because of pregnancy, health reasons, you’ve volunteered to drive, or you’re catering for guests who are doing without, here are my top tips for raising a glass with a smile on your face.
