“As far as my daughters are concerned, the magical time of Christmas starts as early as the beginning of November – and I think many of us feel the same way.

The roots of the festive magic are entwined in the security of childhood and the wonder of it all. There’s something that takes us back in time and makes us feel reassuringly safe and cosy, no matter how old we may be. Family, friends, the hustle and bustle of our market town, thick coats, gloves and hats, the smell of coal smoke on a cold, quiet afternoon – I love it all, but it’s the good food and the busy kitchen I think I love the most.

My festive daydreaming tends to turn to ham, blue cheese, smoked fish and dried fruit, and how I’ll make the most of them during the weeks ahead.

These recipes are a chronicle of winter favourites to help fill the hungry gaps before the main event and create a little bit of that Christmas magic.”
