Awards season has been bittersweet for Todd Haynes’ drama Carol. Picking up more than 180 industry nominations and widespread critical acclaim, this exqui site adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price Of Salt was poised to clean up, so many were left scratching their heads when its stars and makers walked away empty-handed from the Golden Globes, the Baftas and, most recently, the Oscars. The film’s screenwriter Phyllis Nagy herself was “surprised and disappointed” at the snub from the Academy, and said it was a “bit of a puzzle” to her why the film had been left out in the cold. A puzzle that we’ve decided to try and solve so that the next lesbian drama might fare a little better.
