A few years ago, I received an email from someone who wanted me to donate to their crowdfund.

I read the de scription, and it said they needed help with their rent. It was strange then, but over the years, has become common. If it’s not rent directly, then it’s someone’s bill for chest surgery, or an appeal to replace a stolen bike. I have no issue giving my friends money when they’re hard up, or donating my book sales to a particular cause, but the latest wave of requests signal a disturbing cultural shift, partly precipitated by insidious new technologies.
