ESME PATTERSON
We Were Wild (Extra Mile)
If Patterson’s last album – 2015’s brilliant Woman To Woman – felt bound by theme (covers and responses to famous songs about women), this rockin’, rousing follow-up from the Colorado songbird feels positively scattershot in comparison, a stylistically eclectic salvo of guitar songs – from the rattling, toe-tapping country-punk of Feels Right and the dark, waterlogged Neil Young-like hummer The Waves to softer, simpler numbers: No River’s sweet, creek rock, Guadalupe’s gentle, unplugged strum-and-pick.
