JULIETA

Dir Pedro Almodóvar

In Pedro Almodóvar films, mother-daughter relationships have a depth and passion more usually reserved for cinematic love affairs, and wives are equally fond of their husbands and their husbands’ mistresses. Enjoy a refreshing holiday from the patriarchy on this slow voyage through the sunshine and shade of one woman’s life, before and after the disappearance of her daughter. Yes, it’s a bit of a weeper but the lucid storytelling, vivid characters and wise insights into human relationships (including a spectrum of well-observed female suffering) make it worth the tissues. Plus, there’s the fun of playing spot-the-momentarily-acknowledged-lesbian-relationship.
