“How I survived”

“I was plunged into a new, scary life and the one person who could have helped was no longer there”

Gemma, 39, special needs teacher

Jaye and I met through our employer’s LGBT employee group in 2004 and had our first date in Feb 2005. We quickly became inseparable – we brought out the best in each other, encouraging each other to pursue our dreams. Jaye was unlike anyone I ever met – she was gorgeous, funny, honest, caring and always wanted to make things better. Jaye was an amazing cook and lived for music. We went to hundreds of gigs during our relationship – she was always discovering new bands and music. She even DJ’d at our wedding! Jaye loved to share her music – initially with compilation CDs, then later with mixes she had done. She created a weekly mix for her exercise class and DJ’d at friends’ parties. We loved dancing together – some Saturday nights we would just push the furniture back and dance round the living room!
