Clare Summerskill, whose play Rights Of Passage follows the journeys of three lesbian and gay asylum seekers
Rights Of Passage is a new verbatim play that I have written based entirely on interviews with LGBT asylum seekers in the UK and people working in that area. The play has been funded by the Arts Council, and will tour to theatres around the country for six weeks, beginning at Chelsea Theatre, London, on 11 May. I will be acting in it, alongside three other actors from my theatre company, Artemis.
I started work on this project over five years ago. At that time, I was interested in the question of whether LGBT people with certain freedoms in the West have any kind of responsibility towards their LGBT siblings who are still being persecuted in other countries.
