On Topp of the world

New Zealand’s irresistible comedy duo, the Topp Twins, turn 60 in May. Household names back home, Lynda and Jools have incomparable appeal, and have been delighting audiences with a distinctive brand of original music and character comedy for more than three decades. We caught up with these cheeky Kiwi treasures ahead of their birthday celebrations next month to find out the secrets of their success.

DIVA: You’ve had such an incredible career, it’s hard to know where to start. So let’s go back to the beginning. Tell us how it all started.

JOOLS TOPP: Well, we were born, that was helpful. [Laughs] Mum and dad didn’t know they were having twins. When I came out first, they thought there was something wrong with me because I didn’t weigh much. They were expecting mum to have an eight pound baby. Lynda popped out 12 minutes later, then it was a great celebration, because there was an eight pound baby. We’d just come out as two halves!

LYNDA TOPP: We’ve always had this great sense of never being alone and I think it’s given us so much courage. We tackle anything. Have a go at anything. Try something new. The other thing is, if you’ve got a twin that pops out with you, there’s an instant harmony for singing.
