From Ukraine, With Love

›› Do you ever believe those Grindr profiles that are looking for “chat only”? Well, Liam Campbell travels the world doing just that while compiling his photography/ travel bookazine, Elska. Interview by Jesse Archer

DNA: Elska is a male photography, culture and travel art-zine. How did it start?

Liam Campbell: I studied photography in college but never used it professionally. I also love to travel, although ‘love’ isn’t a strong enough word. I wanted to combine these two passions into one endeavour.

What does the word Elska mean? Elska is the Icelandic word for love. Iceland was the first foreign country I’d ever been to and there was borne my love of travel.

Travel has now become a sort of profession. I had been a teacher but decided to take a job as a flight attendant so I could travel for free and be able to get into photography on layovers. At first I was doing candid street-style photography but I got more and more into individual people. After about a year I decided to leave the airline and make Elska. This way I’d continue to travel, meet and photograph local guys, and package it into a periodical bookazine concept, each issue based on a particular city.
