Five-Star Bali

Forget six-dollar massages, over-crowded clubs, and standard hotels filled with yelping children, Bali’s luxury scene is booming and ready to cater to your every whim. Joshua Heath went through hell on this assignment…

LIKE MANY Australians, I visited Bali in my early twenties on a shoestring budget and loved every minute: racing through the streets on a scooter, massages on the beach, and crazy Kuta nightlife. Now that I’m a little older and have a better bank balance I’ve developed a taste for the finer things in life, including how I like to holiday. I’ve enjoyed the sun-soaked beaches of Saint Tropez and Mykonos, but never thought of Bali as a high-end holiday destination. All that’s changed. Some of Bali’s resorts and restaurants are stunningly world-class.

The author, Joshua Heath at Karma Kandara.

Some of the world’s best chefs and mixologists have put Bali’s culinary scene on the map. Here are my top 5.

Set on the private beach of the Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay overlooking the 57-metre infinity pool, Sundara has five-star flair with a sexy, sophisticated and relaxed beach club vibe. The panoramic sunset views don’t hurt either. Unlike many other sunset destinations in Bali, Sundara is not over-crowded.

About DNA Magazine

DNA #192 is our Travel Issue. Our gorgeous cover model this month is Neighbours star Matt Wilson. Check out his sexy shoot with photographer Christian Scott inside. Matt also talks to DNA exclusively about playing gay on Australia’s most loved soap, his previous career as an aussieBum model and his advice for gay guys and girls struggling with their sexuality. Want more hot guys? Online favourite Cole Monahan teams up with Michael Dar for a racy shoot, Daniel Garofali gets down and dirty with James Demitri and we check out the hottest shots from fire island (no pun intended). #192 is our Travel Issue and we have plenty of amazing holiday pieces. We check out the five star living of Bali, check out the boys, beads and non-stop parties of New Orleans, hit the slopes in Queenstown for Gay Ski Week, hit the desert of Palm Springs for their White Party and hit up gay pride in Spain. We catch up with Sydney rocker Jack Colwell, find out why Adele is the biggest pop star on the planet, chat to Skyhooks legend Bob Starkie ahead of the band’s 40th anniversary and watch In The Grayscale, a new film about coming to terms with who you really are. We also check out The Drunk Shakespeare Society, the rise of the bromance, DNA’s diva and team give advice to a reader struggling to find love, check out the hottest looks from the Marco Marco fashion show and farewell 2015 with our year in review and why it was a massive year for gay music. Also our favourites are here, too, including Loving, Month in a Minute, Boys Toys and Urban Homo.
