CELEBRITY SAFARI Indefensibly fun and escapist!

If gossip is the food of the gods, tuck into this banquet! The new memeoir Starf*cker is a delicious entree of boy bands, pop stars, teen queens, hustlers, hangers-on and Hollywood has-beens. For dessert there’s gayfor-pay, fat ass injections, STDs and existential angst. Jesse Archer sits down with author Matthew Rettenmund.

DNA: Congrats on the book! Starfucking has been your lifelong obsession. Is this healthy? Matthew Rettenmund: Starfucking is healthy if you maintain a sense of humor about it.

I am, of course, thrilled to meet someone famous who has meant something to me, but I worked for years as a teen-magazine editor and have encountered countless famous people professionally so I know how not to be a total lunatic around them. I am, however, fascinated by starfuckers who are so into it they have no sense of irony about it.

Also, it’s important to have some things in your life that are just unabashedly, indefensibly fun and escapist.

Matthew with porn star Brent Corrigan.

It was a rocky start when your very first fan letter, to Charlie’s Angels’ Jaclyn Smith, went unanswered. How did you cope and carry on? It was devastating, but it made it easier later on when her character, Kelly Garrett, took a bullet to the head in an episode.

Does starfucking have anything to do with your gayness? I think gay men are extrainterested in celebrity because when someone is famous it’s a function of how he or she is perceived by society. There are layers – the public image, the private self – and plenty of gossip, which is very similar to being gay.

Who tops your haven’t-met-yet list? I actually would love to meet Jaclyn Smith because Charlie’s Angels was a huge deal to me. But there are quite a few: Tina Louise (she’s my neighbour, but I’ve never seen her in person); Lupita Tovar and Susan Kohner.

I know Tina Louise played Ginger on Gilligan’s Island, but who are the other two? Lupita is the world’s oldest living actress at age 105, the female lead in the Spanish-language Dracula [1931] that was filmed simultaneously, and on the same sets of Bela Lugosi’s Dracula; Kohner is her daughter, whose character passed for white in Imitation Of Life [1959], the best melodrama ever.
