As the saying goes, when life hands you lemons you make lemonade. That is Queen Bey’s mantra in the not-so-cleverly-disguised lyrics in 12 tracks that growl about infidelity and a husband who comes home at 3am and “lies to me”. It certainly sounds like there’s a lot of hurt here, so if you’re in break-up recovery mode perhaps stick to Single Ladies instead. With a musical focus somewhere between alt-country and indie-pop, Beyoncé is also trying to rewrite the musical rules. Freedom (featuring rapper Kendrick Lamar) throws down a chart challenge to Rhianna who only needs to burp these days (isn’t that what Work was?) to get a #1, although this isn’t an easy album to love. On first listen there doesn’t appear to be any obvious big hits although 6 Inch (featuring The Weeknd) is spooky, dirty swamp rock. More an artistic statement than a great album, this Lemonade is slightly sour and lacks fizz.
