On the day Donald Trump was inaugurated as US President, an American charity worker married his Iraqi refugee boyfriend in a romantic and goofy beach wedding on a remote Muslim Thai island. Yasir and Andrew’s is a timely story of love and hope. Story and photography by Marc Andrews.

It was purely coincidental that moviestar handsome Yasir and his dashing husband-to-be Andrew decided to hold their wedding at the end of January this year. While millions of people around the globe protested against President Trump’s inauguration, on that same day a group of 100 people witnessed a much smaller political statement.

This testament to gay love was held on Koh Mook, a predominantly Muslim island on the southern peninsula of Thailand, close to the Malaysian border. Planning for this affirmative action started some 18 months prior, long before Donald Trump announced his, sadly successful, bid for the US presidency.

A couple for over three years, Andrew and Yasir discovered each other on a gay dating app. Andrew, a health specialist who has saved countless lives in Africa, was based in the US, while Yasir, an IT specialist who speaks seven languages, was living in Sydney. After a year of chatting they decided to take the plunge and meet. What ensued was a whirlwind romance, not to mention a somewhat rare, openly gay relationship between a tall, chiseled American and a swarthy, beefy Iraqi.
