Sometimes all it takes is the right song at the right time to turn a pop singer into a pop star. For Dua Lipa that song was 2017’s New Rules.
Starting out as a model, she was signed, while still a teenager, to Warner Music in 2015. After a few small hits and appearing as opening act for Troy Sivan in 2016, Dua released New Rules, the sixth single from her debut album. With its catchy chorus and female empowerment lyrics (“If you’re under him/You ain’t getting over him”) it catapulted her to the top of the charts and precipitated her US breakthrough, her Grammy win for Best New Artist and made the rest of the music biz sit up to attention. Dua Lipa had finally arrived to the big time.
