Suddenly Susan

Comedian, actor, dancer, presenter… and now Doctor Who writer! Susan Calman discusses her love for the Time Lord
“To be fair, I would do anything for Doctor Who”, says Susan Calman.

Just like Doctor Who, the reason I love Strictly is if you’re a girl at home, and you don’t think you look perfect, you can see someone who’s not six-foot tall and blonde having a go.”

Susan presents the BBC One game show Armchair Detectives.

By anybody’s standards, Susan Calman had a brilliant 2017. Sitcom Sisters and stand-up show Keep Calman Carry On (both of which Susan writes and stars in) had second series on Radio 4, she presented BBC game shows Armchair Detectives and The Boss, and fulfilled a dream to appear on Strictly Come Dancing. Boosted by her Strictly stint, Radio Times readers voted her TV Star of 2017. “With David Attenborough second! That was a bit surreal”, says Susan, laughing over the phone from her Glasgow home, shortly before heading off to Newcastle for the second leg of the Strictly Come Dancing Live 2018 tour. In the first series of Keep Calman Carry On, Susan joked that she might have missed the call to do Strictly Come Dancing while out hill-walking with her friend, the broadcaster Muriel Gray. So how did it feel when that call came for real?
